In September 2017, a conversation changed everything. Our founder Dr Jim Bailey, a physicist with expertise in organic semiconductors, was discussing agricultural challenges with the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) when they highlighted a critical gap. There was no affordable, quick way to test soil biology in the field. For farmers, this meant waiting weeks for test results, often missing the window to make critical decisions. Jim’s response? “I can design a sensor that can do that.” That single moment of inspiration was the beginning of PES Technologies.
Once our proof of concept confirmed that our sensor could detect soil biology, we secured Innovate UK funding to take the idea further. This led to a collaboration with some of the brightest minds in agronomy, machine learning, and product development from Hutchinson’s, the University of Greenwich, the University of Essex, and the Small Robot Company. ScentsCheck™ was born. What sets ScentsCheck™ apart is its versatility. While soil testing is our starting point, the technology has applications far beyond farming, from food storage to quality control where a change in aroma can be detected, and even potential health care applications.

We’ve developed a portable soil testing device that delivers rapid, accurate results, paired with mobile app integration for easy access to key insights. Our product is continuing to evolve; every year, we analyse around 1000 soil samples to refine our models, accounting for changes in season, weather, and soil composition. While our immediate priority is transforming soil testing with ScentsCheck™, bringing value to farmers, agronomists, and the food and land-based industries, we recognise its vast potential for other industries too. Our vision is clear: we want to enable smarter decisions, for a more sustainable world.
